An important message on Age from Andy Briggs – CEO of Aviva and Chair of the BITC Age Leadership Team

Andy Briggs, Chief Executive Officer, Aviva UK Insurance, AVIVA PLC and Business in the Community's Age Leadership Team Chair, on why companies must recognise the benefits of a multi-generational workforce.

“Many UK companies are recognising the benefits of having a multi-generational workforce. It ensures that we do not lose the valuable skills and talents of older workers while maintaining a workforce that represents diverse customers.

“To get the best out of multi-generational workforces, I would advocate making every role flexible as a default and giving managers training in areas such as mental health and mid-career reviews.

“A key hurdle is dispelling myths and changing mindsets. At Aviva we have provided training for line managers on the importance of having career conversations with people of all ages; as well as sharing statistics to challenge the assumption that older workers are less productive or engaged.”

“By 2020 a third of the workforce will be over 50, so it is time to see the age of experience as a tremendous business opportunity.”
